Hi Paula,

depending on where you live and which council, it may differ and vary slightly. However the OPW, Parks Departments and local councils are really quite helpful. That said publc areas are public areas.

As the suggestion of going through your now residents association may not be applicable in your specific case at this moment - I personally would suggest and usually recommend the local school or church where your child/ family may attend/ be christened. I know in most cases of the church/ school it is really so much appreciated.

For a girl the Prunus amangowa [an upright cherry tree - a bit like a rotary washing line not unfolded and flowering just now in my garden] is an excellent choice; also quite feminine and not so usual.

I'll try and put a post up for you next week if I can - it will be filed under the category of my favourite plants.

Congratulations on the new baby! and be sure and keep me [us all now!] posted on how you get on.

Hope that helps - slán agus beannacht

Hi there. I have just had a baby girl and would love to plant a cherry blossom tree for her. However, as we are renting at the moment, i dont know where to plant one. Do i need to get permission to plant one in a park?

Aido,

re timing:
I'd hold off for a little bit first until most leaves have fallen or most trees on the motorway are fully naked or of bare stems.

re maturity:
Although I'm 31, some would consider me not-mature, after working hours [our weather] but with a good attitude to life! That said with relevence to your tree - how big/ mature/ long it's planted may mean specialist equipment. If you want to email [or post a picture] I can give some better specific information.

Look forward to it
