be kind to your postman

my new post box...

my new post box...

i bought this recently. It took me a while to find it to be honest. But I did. Its an american style mail box. Where did I buy it….? you guessed it… in the UK!

A company called Glencall sell them. I think it cost about €40 including delivery. I tried Ireland. I tried a lot of places… I know I couldn’t find them… *I*couldn’t even find one in the US

Anyhow, it is an essential part of the garden and it did require some digging and mixing of concrete [grrr...!] but it looks good, the post doesn’t get rained on and it looks cool when the post man [hello Jim!] puts the flag up to let me know i’ve got mail.

Putting it together was a little tricky but it is worthwhile and you will need to mix a little cement and gravel [i did a 3:1 mix] to hold it in place. Also make sure its not too windy and you have a spirit level!

Have your say

Constant spam by bunch of losers comes with the territory of having a blog. So, hope you don't mind if your comment queued for moderation if it's your first time on this blog. It's just a precaution to filter out bad from the good, not discouraging vibrant on topic discussions.

    Love it!

    In America, the flag works the other way. If Americans have letters to send, they don’t need to take them to the post office, they can put them in the letterbox, and pull up the flag. (I miss that!) When the postman comes, he knows by the flag that the letters are to go out (haven’t been left *for* you), and he takes them, delivers your day’s mail, then puts the flag down, so you still know when he’s been there.

    My aunt always had funny ones, the ones that are shaped like barns or cows.

    Watch out for booby traps on Halloween …

    You could have made it easier for yourself by doing what I did. Simply screw the post to the fencing post – job done no digging or mixing.

    I’d like to see more of these in ‘boughal the post man loves ours and he uses the flag which is deadly on a wet day.

    Very inspiring!!!! Was this a self build project or did you sub contract the instilation of this contraption?? also was the 3:1 mix sufficient i would have taught a 4:1 mix would be more suitable!

    @susan – i wish we had potmen in Ireland like thatie where they collect our mail….

    @aido i could have made it easier for myself… but what if your fence falls down? Yes and for certain ‘boughal could do with a lot more of these…

    @brains to burn
    you find inspiration in the most unusual of places. You may be correct in your mix rates – but of course logic must prevail when one doesn’t have enough gravel…?!!
