even more waste at fingal county council
To encourage home composting Fingal County Council sell home compost bins at a reduced rate and deliver them free of charge to residents living in Fingal.
So why then two weeks ago did I get a brown bin delivered…
One may say that’s good, right? not really. Another boo boo by Fingal County Council then possibly? The probability is that one rule sometimes doesn’t fit all – and sometimes the first attempted option was the correct one.
People were encouraged to compost their own. Seminars were held. Schools were encouraged. They were even delivered for free and sold at a reduced rate. I built my own.
And to keep that euphora going, what did Fingal county council do next… they delivered one brown bin to every household in Fingal. Free? Not likely.
I rang Fingal County Council.
‘I don’t need a brown bin. I made my own composter’
‘well you may as well keep it, you’ll be charged for us collecting it anyway…’ they told me
‘But I won’t be using it, I have a compost heap that I was encouaged to make’
‘well we can take it away if you want, but you’ll still pay for it..’
‘But I wont be using it…’
and so the logic continued…..
Why wasn’t a composter delivered free to every household in Fingal? Why didn’t they ask if we wanted one? Why would a garden on an acre site or anything around that size need a brown bin? Should one put the hedgegrow cuttings of that site in it? Would they fit? A Race against waste…. ?
I understand the new brown bin may have a place but – if a tax is to be imposed upon me – surely I should have a choice. For example; with a the television set, I can choose to get rid of it and with that in mind, should the same logic not apply here… ?
