The Right Time To Grow

Mar.8.2010  by  Peter Donegan MI Hort

With high day time temperatures, the sun factor increasing the warmth in the greenhouse well above the the teens and night time temperatures in the minus…. I could almost do a piece here on autumn colour but… it’s March and there are no leaves on the trees. So instead the resulting problem and piece is [...]

March In The Garden

Mar.5.2010  by  Peter Donegan MI Hort

I haven’t done an ‘In the garden‘ session so far this year. Mainly because, well… I guess the snow, the rain, the cold and in such abundance just got a bit too much for me. Anyhow, that aside, it’s time to get grooving and moving and here is why and what  I will be doing [...]

Which Compost To Buy

Feb.9.2010  by  Peter Donegan MI Hort

Buying compost for some, is possibly a little like me trying to figure which washing powder I am supposed to put in the supermarket trolley. It wasn’t always like that….
I couldn’t believe it when in the garden centre recently the amount of types variations in labells one could buy. It’s seemed extremely confusing [...]

Fireblight

Feb.9.2010  by  Peter Donegan MI Hort

Two of the photographs above are of a collection of Sorbus trees that I had in my garden. They are now nothing but a pile of ashes. The sorbus you see are members of the rosaceae or rose family – the most of which are susceptible to a disease known as fireblight.
The first thing I [...]

Moving A Tree

Jan.25.2010  by  Peter Donegan MI Hort

The weather outside for the last few months as long as I can remember now has been a disaster being quite frank.
The funny thing about horticulture however is that life simply goes on. And when one misses out on a time frame of the season….. one often has to wait until the following year to [...]

And what an end to November and a start to the month it has been…

Garden Hygiene

Nov.5.2009  by  Peter Donegan MI Hort

I remember when I was about 14 years old I’d been given this summer project of my parents front and back garden. Lopping shears, shears and my secateurs in hand I went for it.
The place had become quite overgrown. Of course when filled with plants like the Fuchsia, Forsythia, Eleagnus, Senecio, Spirea Ligustrums and the like… the types guaranteed to grow and what also [...]

November In The Garden

Oct.30.2009  by  Peter Donegan MI Hort

It is that time of year… some say it’s bloody depressing. But I like it. I don’t know why particularly… maybe it’s that I get home [a little] earlier… maybe it’s that I get to burn the timber that I have mamaged to amalgamate over the last eight months or so… I don’t know. [...]

Peach Leaf Curl

Oct.21.2009  by  Peter Donegan MI Hort

As a by the way…. just because its called peach leaf curl, it doesn’t mean it only affects peach trees. It will affect most Prunus related species.
Anyhow, I don’t like this one at all. It simply looks so ugly…. caused by the fungus Taphrina deformans [the second part of the name says it all...], it is [...]
