I have to say I really liked Matthew Jebb the first speaker but I will agree entirely with you regarding Anna Pavord - in my opinion she did bring the old world into something ‘non-boring’ by giving it a relation to todays world

Such a useful (and fashionable) post.

I spent an enjoyable afternoon listening to talks on the naming of plants and the history of botany on Saturday.

Anna Pavord almost reduced the assembly to a flood of emotion on the subject of science, order and the naming of plants. Post-colonialist domination of Latin was discussed at length.

Lewis Glucksman Memorial Symposium

Many people find the discipline of botany quite demanding.

However, as you present it, it brings clarity and communication.

you are spot on and I’m so glad you made this comment - however as you can gather from the style of the article ‘cofusus with big.plant.names.icus’ wasn’t on the list for this post - moreso a general explantation.
Whilst apology is therefore due to the purist botanist one is equally due to the many US citizens and also members of the O’ Flaherty family if there was any offence caused.

I love plant names and spent my year at Longwood working with the curator and verifying names for their database - I really am a plant name geek. So in that spirit I have to point out that the species name always starts with a lower, not upper, case. And genus & species are always italicised. Sorry mate, but I’m also a pedantic saddo.

Through childlike eyes more often, although quote simplistic may most often be perceived as simply those of most genius. I remember collecting doggy poo to put on the first bulb i ever grew (a hyacinth) when I was young cox my grandad told me it was fertilizer

wonderous things have happened!

since yoour letter, I have not cared to check my pot or garden for sprouts. Today, As i was walking my dog around our backyard, i glanced upon my garden! i saw an odd weed (this garden is very messy full of misc. plants that have been dropped their) I dug it up and found on the end, my pumpkin seed! there has been a slight warmth in weather lately but i didnt think of it as much to matter. when i figured out this was a sprout, i looked everywhere!
i found a few more and planted them in a small “patch”. as this had gotten my hopes up, i check the one i had planted in a pot in my garage. sure enough it already had one sprout. here is my blog were i have some pics posted for you!

Great post. I’m glad you blog, because the phone book is nothing but a list of strangers’ names, and when I need you in a few months’ time, it’s going to be a relief and a joy to finally call a tradesmen I feel I already know somewhat, and can trust.

what’s the options - Enda Kenny?! not a chance…. I would suggest Charlie Mc Creevy maybe looking for a transfer… [partly because he favours Ireland a bit too much - when in Brussels... although he may have to accept a drop in wages] and he’d be a great acquisition

Oh boy…and I was going to post today with a blast at the HSE! LOL

I wanted to cool off a bit first, but perhaps I should strike while the iron’s hot, eh?

It’s their waste that drives me insane…wasted time, wasted money, wasted effort. So much inefficiency, when on the family and individual level, we have to pull pure genius out of our beleaguered backsides to try to make a living from the nothing that’s left.

Is it wrong that I found this funny?

It’s such a pain though really. For the duration of the Celtic Tiger we all worked so hard to push this country forward and to make our lives better, and now in the downturn it seems the Government aren’t ready to help us out. In fact, we’re expected to work even harder just to keep the economy afloat. I voted Fianna Fail in the last election. Never again!

If there was a bit more of that kind of organisation here I mightn’t have had to leave gardening for a living.

Though if you saw my sunflowers, you might think that was for the best: miserable spindly things that have only just flowered, with blooms the size of a coffee saucer. Which is just what I was expecting, really. I didn’t show them much love.

I’m impressed. Fair play, RHS. But they do make a habit of doing things properly. The slightly annoying prescriptive rigour about which way up to plant my sunflower seeds &c. (which I can ignore anyway if I want to) just reinforces my conviction that they really do know what they’re on about.
